A socio-cultural approach to dental health care for the Boston Native American community

Abstract
A culturally-oriented, multiphasic dental health care program was planned and implemented for the Boston Native American community. An assessment of dental need and oral hygiene awareness in previous programs revealed that the oral health of this population was poor. Before plans for the dental program were developed, additional background infomation on the Indian population was deemed necessary. A thorough investigation of cultural differences as they relate to planning strategy and medical care was conducted throughout the program through literature review, conversation, personal interview, and observation. It was felt that the knowledge and understanding of the culture and traditions of the community ascertained by this investigation enhanced the realistic planning, effective implementation,and overall success of the program. The program was composed of four projects:
I. Development of a Health Advisory Board
II. Prosthetic Care Program
III. Awareness and Utilization of Neighborhood Health Centers
IV. Children's Fluoride Mouthrinse Program
The program served to encourage awareness of oral health, and stimulate greater demand for dental care in the Indian population.
