Abstract
This dissertation is based on the assumption that transference and counter-transference reactions exist in pastor-parishioner relationships. The problem of the dissertation is twofold: (1) to compile a group of unambiguous examples of transference and counter-transference which have occurred in the Protestant ministry and which cover the important relational areas of pastoral work; (2) to examine these examples and to speculate as to their possible implications tor the Protestant ministry.
The definitions of the phenomena as used in this study are as follows: transference is a psychological bond between people in which one person's reaction to
a current relationship is influenced by his former relationship patterns to significant persons rather than by the stimuli present in the context of the current relationship. When the second person's reaction to the first person in the same relationship is also influenced by his former relationships rather than the stimuli in the present context he is involved in counter-transference. It is assumed that these reactions are always irrational or inappropriate. [TRUNCATED]
