Abstract
[The Protestant missionary movement of the nineteenth century affected non-
Western contexts in many ways.3 From the perspective of the missionary sending nations, easily the most significant factor in Christianity’s spread was the arrival of Western Christian missionaries in the “dark heathen world” of the South, including Africa.4 In this chapter, however, I seek to show ways in which in the work of the Basel Mission Society (hereinafter Basel Mission), whose presence in the Gold Coast spanned close to a century, the role of indigenous agents contributed to the success of the mission.]
