The effect of pulpal pain threshold and pain tolerance in response to electroacupuncture on "HoKu" point

Abstract
Acupuncture needles attached to electrical stimulation were placed on "Hoku" acupuncture points to investigate the changes of pulpal pain threshold and pain tolerance. Placebo treatment was also employed to detect any changes of pulpal pain threshold and pain tolerance as compared to electro acupuncture. An Analytic Technology pulp tester was used to induce pain to the subjects' teeth and the corresponding readings were recorded. 84 teeth on 14 subjects who underwent both electro acupuncture and placebo treatment were examined in this study. It was demonstrated that the majority of the teeth showed no statistically significant difference in electric pulp test readings before and after both placebo and electro acupuncture treatment; except for maxillary anterior teeth which showed a statistically significant increase in pain threshold by 2.4 and pain tolerance by 3.4 under placebo effect. In addition, mandibular posterior teeth showed significant electro acupuncture effect with an increase in pain threshold by 5.0 and pain tolerance by 3.3. The minor increase in both pain threshold and pain tolerance shown in this study, though statistically significant, was not considered as clinically significant.
