Abstract
Statement of the problem. The purpose of this study was to trace the historical development of the master's degree in the field or music. An attempt was made to discover significant developments from the philosophies and practices of original master's degrees in other fields and to show how music emerged to take its place among them. The trends and practices of existing programs, especially in curriculums and structures, form a major portion of the study. [TRUNCATED]
