Abstract
The purpose of this investigation has been to explore the range of the theoretical and practical compatibility of psychoanalysis and religion in the light of the experience and writings of Oscar Pfister a Swiss scholar, minister of the Reformed Church and psychoanal yst. Although having published twenty-seven books and fifty-nine articles in the field, (these being the primary data for this study), he has been little known in America. The major psychoanalytic writings, the psychoanalytic studies in religion, the writings in the psychology of religion and in pastoral psychology have been examined in order to provide a frame of reference against which Pfister's contribution to each can be more adequatel assessed. From these areas of inquiry also arise the norms by which Pfister's synthesis of psychoanalysis and religion is evaluated. [TRUNCATED]
